sleep in peace.

my lolo, the photographer, died yesterday. he died peacefully in his sleep, at our old house in bosco, mangagoy, surigao del sur. he was 84 years old. his was a life well-lived.

‘lo, salamat sa tanan-tanan. ikaw ang nag-ingon na dapat sa manila ko mag high school kay duol sa amerika. nituo ko. animas. pero way kurat, salamat lang gihapon. kay tungod ato, nagsugod nako mangandoy.

i envy this man. he had the same job for more than 50 years and he never complained. how can he, when everyday at work people offered him their best smiles, showed him their best achievements, invited him to special occasions. his devotion to his craft endeared him to generations (he even named one of my uncles after one of his lenses, Symmar). he has heard all of their stories. he has seen the world change.

i will miss him badly.

  7. tnx seoul. im thinking of creating a tribute site for him, para pud ang fans club nya maka bilin man lang ug note. daghan kaayo ko collection sa iya old photos, dating back to 1950. in fact naa pa sya picture nga 1927. ug naa sya pic sa iya tatay na 1911. grabe no?

  16. joey condolence..i was teary when i read about how he started to make you dream of big things..kahilakon gyud ko kay in a way, i grew up in his studio :-) didto mi magpakodak sa ako manghod plus sometimes himoon pa natong play ground hehehhe :-) condolence joe, i know it’s not easy. i just lost my grandmother last year and even though they are very old, we will never be ready to lose a loved one. pero ato na lang huna hunaon now, naa na ta angels to watch over us :-)

    We will iclude Nong Tony in our prayers, The Basanez Family knows him well, he is a good man and devoted to his craft he will be missed but let us be consoled that he is now in heaven/BTW very moving tribute to ur Lolo.

  37. Joey, you know how close we are to your family, starting with your mom, being our classmate since our St. Margaret days and my daughters also close to you and your siblings. Halos dili gyud mi ma-absent kung naay handaan sa inyo (adto gud mi sa Davao from Cebu para lang icelebrate ang bday sa imong mama.:-) and all those times, Nong Tony was also there. All I can say is, tutuong tao mo tanan esp. your mom. JOey, ikaw gyud ang nagmana sa imong lolo sa photography. You are so talented!

    also close being pioneers of Bislig since 1950’s. Though i have

  40. Bitaw condolence kaayo. All of my childhood pics were taken by your lolo. I was in school at about the same time as your mom/ uncles / aunts ‘nya duol ra kaayo ang inyong balay sa bosco sa amo. One day I’ll send you a pic taken by your lolo way before you born. I think all of my school pics in the JBS yearbooks were taken by him, including my HS grad pic. Nasenti kog kalit… now I understand your passion for photography. Na-two-plus-two ra gyud.

    AsI have mentioned to you in the past in one of our chats that your grandpa is known to all peoplr in Mangagoy…I had been to his studio so many times for picure taking.. (usahay utangon usa kon wala pay payday.. mosugot lang pud si Nong Tony…) He is such a lovely man.but we can’t deny it that his legacy remains…

    My condolences to you and to all that Nong Tony had left behind…

  55. dodong joey, condolence i dont know your lolo peronaly, but who doesnt know his studio? my brothers used to lived in gamawon dist.although im from tagbina but i took a vocatinal class at mangagoy vocational sch., that was b-4 ur time he-he.i had a grad-pict.frm.his studio.now i lived in n.c. usa.
